“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” (Galatians 5:13-14)
“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28)
“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10)
November is upon us. Reformation Day has been remembered. All Saints Day officially marks the first day of the month, and anticipation for Thanksgiving and the Christmas season begins to escalate.
One thing that often gets lost in the shuffle is the reoccurring need to look at individual service to the church. In other words, November is election time for Church Board positions, and this year, it is particularly critical since the new office building has garnered so much of our focus. In fact, primarily because of the building issues, a formal nominating committee was not formed this year. This was an oversight that can only be corrected with direct commitment from Trinity members.
On November 13th, the Voters’ Meeting agenda will need a list of nominations for various offices in the church. Thirteen volunteers are needed to fill the positions that are already vacant or will become vacant as current terms expire at the first of the year.
Because we have not been able to find enough people to serve in the past, our Stewardship Board has already been deactivated and it would be tragic for this trend to continue—not only in the work that is lost, but most importantly, in what it tells us about the motivation and commitment of members of Trinity.
On the last page of this newsletter, you will find a listing of Trinity’s church offices, the names of those currently serving, and the year their terms are up. The vacancies needing to be filled this year include:
Here is more information about these positions and boards:
Members of the Board of Elders are responsible for working closely with the pastor for the spiritual well-being of the congregation. They are charged with supervising all aspects of public worship and church publications. Their duties also include exercising church discipline, acting on membership changes, and assisting the pastor in monitoring members. They are responsible for the director of music position and church organists. The board consists of six members with a three year term of office.
Members of the Board of Trustees give attention to the financial responsibilities of the congregation and for all of the church’s physical property. They supervise the church’s endowment fund and represent the congregation in all legal matters. They are responsible for the custodian and negotiate all church service contracts. The board consists of five members with a three year term of office.
Members of the Board of Education give attention to the teaching efforts and opportunities of the congregation. They are also responsible for the director of ministry to children and youth (DMCY). The board consists of six members with a three year term of office.
Members of the Board of Evangelism give attention to outreach opportunities in the community and the world and actively promote mission thinking and service work in church members. The board consists of five members with a three year term of office.
Members of the Auditing Committee give attention to the financial books of the church treasurer and make a yearly report to the congregation. The committee consists of three members with a three year term of office.
Any adult member of the congregation can be elected to the Board of Trustees, Education, Evangelism, and the Auditing Committee. Any adult male member can be elected as an elder. (Scripture teaches and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod follows the practice that an individual in a position such as elder must be male.)
Your willingness to be placed on the ballot for anyone of these positions would be greatly appreciated. You can also nominate someone else for the position. If you are interested in any of the positions yourself or have someone in mind that you think would qualify, please contact Vice-chairman Doug Haese or the church office (414-271-2219). God grant every able bodied member of Trinity to prayerfully consider their own service commitment as we plan for doing God’s work in 2006. CURRENT TRINITY EV LUTHERAN CHURCH OFFICERS
